Flat, jumps and Elvis — what could be better?

-

THE focus at Ffos Las will soon turn to a summer of flat racing — but not before one final jumps meeting.

On the evening of Friday, July 12, the track will host a seven-race jump card, followed by a set from the UK’s number one Elvis tribute, Suspiciously Elvis.

There will be a prize for the best Elvis lookalike, so if you’re attending throw on your best jumpsuit!

The flat then kicks off on Monday, July 29, where entry will be completely free but you must book in advance. See the website for details.

Gin & Jazz is the theme on the evening of Thursday, August 1, before Picnic Raceday on Tuesday, August 13.

The ever-popular Heatforce Ladies Day, featuring ABBA tribute Bjorn Again, takes place on Friday, August 23, before the 2-4-1 Raceday rounds off a busy month at the racecourse on Thursday the 29th.

It was a great weekend for Pembrokeshire trainer Peter Bowen and his jockey son James. They had two winners on Sunday at Cartmel Racecourse in the Lake District.

Wells De Lune, a 14-1 chance, got the ball rolling by winning the £25,000 first prize in the feature hurdle race, then 20-1 shot Dr Robin made it a double for the Welsh yard.

Another young Welsh jockey making the headlines is amateur rider Ben Jones, son of soon-to-be Ffos Las clerk of the course Dai Jones.

Last week Ben rode a 50-1 winner on the flat at Wolverhampton and 24 hours later he completed a hattrick of victories on Midnight Folie when the mare won at Newton Abbot for Vale of Glamorgan trainer Tim Vaughan.

Ben joins a long list of Welsh jockeys rising through the ranks, including Alan Johns, Richard Patrick, Connor Brace, Charlie Price, Lorcan Williams and Jack Tudor. It’s a great era for Welsh racing.
