TOP OF THE CLASS Frank keeps get­ting bet­ter and bet­ter

ELEVEN days af­ter the Dyfed Sec­ondary Schools Ath­let­ics Cham­pi­onships were held over two days in Car­marthen, the Dyfed Schools Dis­trict’s NASUWT Cup Fi­nal match soon came around rapidly and headed to the Haver­ford­west High School Pren­der­gast cam­pus.

Schools from Queen El­iz­a­beth, Dyf­fryn Taf, Dyf­fryn Aman, Bro Dine­fwr, Haver­ford­west High, Y Pre­seli, Aber­aeron, Bro Pedr, Pen­wed­dig, Bryn­g­wyn, Y Strade, Coed­cae and Glan y Môr were all top two/ high­est fin­ish­ers in their re­spec­tive county and cup matches in May and June and so trav­elled to take part in this mid­week fix­ture.

Most of the ar­eas within the dis­trict held their qual­i­fy­ing matches in re­cent weeks at Car­marthen, Llanelli and Haver­ford­west. Wet weather af­fected the Ceredi­gion match in Tre­garon and as a re­sult was can­celled.

The win­ners and run­ners-up from the U14 girls, U14 boys, U16 girls and U16 boys will now rep­re­sent Dyfed at the Welsh Schools Na­tional NASUWT Cymru Cup & Plate Fi­nals at Pen­lan Arena, Bre­con, next Wed­nes­day.

Fol­low­ing dis­trict qual­i­fy­ing matches up and down the coun­try in May and June, Wales’s top run­ners, jumpers and throw­ers will de­scend on the Cardiff In­ter­na­tional Sports Sta­dium ath­let­ics track this Satur­day for the 72nd edi­tion of the Welsh Schools’ an­nual cham­pi­onships.

Se­lected ath­letes will be rep­re­sent­ing their dis­tricts from Dyfed, Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff & Vale, Eryri, Glam­or­gan Val­leys, North East Wales, Powys and South East Wales.

The Welsh Schools Ath­letic As­so­ci­a­tion’s fix­ture will take place as part of the Ge­mau Cymru week­end which is or­gan­ised by Urdd Gobaith Cymru across three lo­ca­tions in Cardiff,

Swansea and Bala.

The com­pe­ti­tion is open to the Ju­nior (Year 8 & 9), Mid­dle (Year 10 & 11) and Se­nior (Year 12 & 13) age groups.

Se­lec­tion for the Schools’ In­ter­na­tional Match (SIAB) will be made the day af­ter for the event on July 20, where Welsh Schools will pick their U17 team for the an­nual in­ter­na­tional be­tween Wales, Eng­land, Scot­land and Ire­land at Swansea Univer­sity.

Queen El­iz­a­beth High School’s Ju­nior Boys, Mid­dle Girls and Mid­dle Boys teams from Car­marthen will be head­ing to Bre­con for the Welsh NASUWT ath­let­ics fi­nals next month.
