Religious Education Ambassadors meet MP at Houses of Parliament
COEDCAE’S Religious Education Ambassadors enjoyed a recent visit to the Houses of Parliament courtesy of Llanelli MP Nia Griffith.
The 10 youngsters had a tour which included the Commons Chamber and they also visited the room where the Queen prepares for the State Opening of Parliament.
Located above the entrance to St Stephen’s Hall, the site of numerous demonstrations, pupils saw a light sculpture dedicated to the Suffragettes; pupils stood in the footsteps of the hundreds of thousands of women and men who went to Parliament to fight for women’s right to the vote.
Everyone’s interests and imaginations were sparked at the sight of the statue with the missing spur. The suffragette, Marjorie Hume chained herself to this statue and the spur was broken off when police came to remove her.
After seeing this, it seemed fitting that they were lucky enough to spend time with two female MPs.
The ambassadors were met by Llanelli MP Nia Griffith, who presented them with certificates to commemorate their visit. Tonia Antoniazzi, MP for Gower also met with pupils for an informal chat.
The ambassadors are looking forward to welcoming Ms Griffith into school to further discuss the links between religion and politics, and to find out more about a day in the life of an MP.
