Bevan steals the show as seniors take centre stage

FINE weather was the order of the day for the annual Seniors Open Day at Carmarthen Golf Club.

Coming out on top of the 55-69 age group with an excellent score of 41 points was John Bevan, followed by Meirion Griffiths on 39 and Charles Maliphant on 38.

In the 70+ age group, Peter AshleyJone­s claimed a winning score of 38 points, followed by Elwyn Morgan on 35 and Ken Gealy on 34. The visitors’ prize went to Huw Jones of Machynllet­h with 36 points, followed by Graham Robinson of Neath (32).

There were also course prizes which included nearest the pin in two on the third hole, with Meirion Griffiths making sure of the prize early on by sinking his second shot from the fourth fairway. Nearest the pin on the ninth went to Michael Marshall from Neath, and nearest the line off the 18th tee was won by Chris Smith.

Cwmgors ABC were presented a cheque of £3,000 to help fund a trip to a tournament in Finland. The cheque came from G Evans & C James Landscapin­g, and the money was well spent as several boxers won gold medals. Company boss Geraint Evans said: “We are so proud to contact the club as myself and Chris are from the area and would like to help the club and give something back to the community.” Among the gold-medal winners was Chris’s 10-year-old son Alfie.
