Towy stars claim medal haul on in­ter­na­tional stage

TOWY Rid­ers have clinched more suc­cess on the in­ter­na­tional stage.

The Euro­pean Ju­nior and Un­der-23 Track Cham­pi­onships took place in Ghent in Bel­gium where an im­pres­sive medal haul by Team GB was spear­headed by the West Wales club.

The week be­gan strongly with Emma Fin­u­cane clinch­ing a sil­ver medal along with Char­lotte Robin­son in the team sprint.

On the same day, Eluned King nar­rowly missed out on a podium place by tak­ing fourth over­all in the scratch race.

By Wednesday, King had put this right when she and fel­low Towy Rider Ella Barn­well formed part of the sil­ver-medal-clinch­ing team pur­suit squad, with Barn­well prov­ing a driv­ing force within the team, who came so close to pip­ping over­all win­ners Italy.

Fin­u­cane bagged a fur­ther sil­ver medal in the sprint event and Barn­well, who rode ev­ery day in the en­durance sec­tion of the squad, fought hard in the in­di­vid­ual pur­suit to climb to fifth.

Her per­sis­tent ef­forts saw her clinch a sil­ver in the om­nium, nar­rowly los­ing out to the Ital­ians again.

The day ended in im­pres­sive fash­ion for Fin­u­cane as she be­came Euro­pean cham­pion in the 500-me­tre time trial, se­cur­ing the gold medal in a time of 35.56 sec­onds.

Team GB se­cured a fur­ther gold medal thanks to Towy Rider Jessica Roberts in the un­der-23 om­nium.

Emma Fin­u­cane (cen­tre) was in su­perb form in Ghent as she bagged a gold medal and three sil­vers.
