Har­ri­ers aces among medals

WALES’S top ath­letes went head to head in the 102nd run­ning of the Welsh Athletics Se­nior Track and Field Cham­pi­onships at the Cardiff In­ter­na­tional Sports Stadium.

Car­marthen Har­ri­ers won 11 medals at the Ju­nior Cham­pi­onships last month and a fur­ther seven medals were won in Cardiff, two of them gold.

Jes­sica Lee fol­lowed up bronze in the 100m by mov­ing up to the un­der-15 girls’ 200m. She won her heat com­fort­ably in 27.20 se­conds, then bagged a sil­ver medal in the fi­nal in a time of 25.67.

There was a dom­i­nant dis­play from un­der-15 Frank Mor­gan. He led his ri­vals from the gun in the 1500m to be­come Welsh ju­nior cham­pion in 4.16.04. Jack Thomas clocked 4.54.81.

In the girls’ 1500m, Amy Greatrick pro­duced a new per­sonal best to fin­ish in 5.17.86.

Un­der-15 Oliver Moruzzi was in­volved in a hotly-con­tested fi­nal over 100 me­tres and ran 12.31. It was also a busy week­end for se­nior man Lewis Evans, who went in both the 100m (11.20) and 200m (22.82).

The un­der-15 girls’ javelin con­cluded the cham­pi­onships at the end of the two-day event and it turned to be worth­while for Cordelia Walker, who threw 32.28m. This was enough to win the girls’ com­pe­ti­tion.

Fur­ther bronze awards came in the un­der-15 girls’ 4x100m where the quar­tet of Thaia Davies, Zara Evans, Bethany Davies and Jes­sica Lee fin­ished third for the Car­marthen club.

There were also a num­ber of Llanelli AC ath­letes in­volved.

Har­ri­son James joined Evans in com­pet­ing in both the sprint events, record­ing 12.10 in the 100m and 24.49 in the 200m.

Un­der-15 team-mates Han­nah Forkuoh (46.64) and Amy Tucker (47.59) com­peted in the un­der-15 girls’ 300m, with the lat­ter mak­ing it into the fi­nal with a top-two fin­ish in the heats.

The club fielded re­lay teams in the un­der-13 girls, un­der-13 boys and un­der-15 girls cat­e­gories. The un­der-13 boys ( Joseph Franklin, El­lis Pen­fold, James Thomas and Rho­dri Roberts) and un­der-13 girls (Amelie Cam­pion, Ffion Coslett, Emily Tucker and Cari Adams) just missed out on medal po­si­tions in fourth.

The un­der-15 girls’ quar­tet of Han­nah Forkuoh, Amy Tucker, Kahlen Jones and Bethan Adams were sev­enth over­all.
