Group’s final chapter shining a light on area

-

THE final book has just been published in a remarkable series putting the spotlight on the Glanymor and Tyisha areas of Llanelli.

The Glanymor and Tyisha History Group of local historians was formed in 2004 and has produced an edition every year since.

Editor Benita Afan Rees said: “It’s a remarkable achievement for a group of volunteers who have shown commitment, dedication and loyalty to the local community.”

The history group was formed, in February 2004, with the help of Communities First, Foothold and the Welsh Assembly.

The aim of the group was to collect, record and publish the history of the area for future generations to enjoy.

The first meeting of the newly-formed group was held at Bethania Chapel on Tuesday, February 10, 2004, at 4.30pm. From its inauguration, regular meetings were held on the first Thursday of every month and before too long articles and photographs came flooding in from local historians and members of the community.

A People’s History: Glanymor & Tyisha Number 1 was launched at Trinity Chapel Vestry on Friday, November 19, 2004, less than 12 months after the history group was established.

The history group has gone from strength to strength and has received photographs and stories, not just from members and residents, but from all over Llanelli, Wales and the world.

Since the first book was published in 2004, 16 editions have been compiled and published.

This is a remarkable achievement for a group of volunteers, dedicated to collecting, recording and saving the history of Seaside, New Dock, Morfa, Machynys, Bwlch-y-Gwynt and Tyisha, for future generations to read and enjoy.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the history group was not able to hold the usual launch of their final edition, but copies of A People’s History: Glanymor & Tyisha Book 16, are now on sale in the usual outlets.
