Memorial service for Rod

-

A MEMORIAL service for former Welsh Office Minister Rod Richards will be held at Llandaff Cathedral on Tuesday, July 30, at 1.30pm.

Mr Richards, pictured, who was also the first leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the National Assembly, died of cancer earlier this month at the age of 72.

Born in Llanelli, he was a Welsh speaker who went to school at Llandovery College and graduated from Swansea University.

He was the MP for Clwyd North West from 1992 until 1997, and a regional AM for North Wales from the Assembly’s inception in 1999 until 2002.

In politics, his combative style soon earned him the nickname “Rod the Rottweiler”.

He later owned a pub in Ystradgynlais.

Prior to his political career he had been a TV newsreader on BBC Wales and S4C. He had also worked for the intelligence services.
