Mason the all-round star for Gowerton

-

SECOND-PLACED Gowerton moved to within 25 points of All Wales Sport Midweek League leaders Llangennech following a 33-run victory against Gorseinon in the latest round of games.

Despite losing the wickets of Tom Davies, who was bowled by Tom Clarke for nine, and Ben Whitehouse, bowled by Jamie Mann for just five, Gowerton recovered thanks to solid batting from Ospreys rugby star Hanno Dirksen (59 not out) and Matthew Mason (35) to reach 148-6 off 20 overs.

Mason was eventually removed when he was trapped lbw by Tom Clarke.

Although Daniel Allen with 34 helped Gorseinon make a good start in pursuit of the target, the later batsmen failed to keep pace with the required run rate despite the valiant efforts of Steve Davies with 24, Tom Clarke (22) and Abdullah Rahimi (16).

The innings came to a close on 115.

The wickets for Gorseinon were shared between Mason (315), Ethan Harris (3-19), Marvel Biju (2-4) and Rhodri Phillips (2-15).

In the only other game played, Llanelli claimed a surprise 10-wicket win against Pontarddulais.

In successfully chasing 119-6 off 20 overs, Ben Edwards hammered a superb 78 not out, which included a six and 10 fours.

Ellis Richards added 34 not out to help the Stradey Park men knock off the runs in 17 overs.

Alex Stewart (33 not out) top-scored in the Pontarddulais innings.

Fixtures ( July 24): Dafen v Llangennech, Llanelli v Ammanford, Pontarddulais v Gowerton.
