Wright the difference as Bronwydd fail in double bid

-

BRONWYDD produced a valiant performance as they failed in their bid to do the double over South Wales Cricket Association division one leaders Cowbridge.

Bronwydd are the only side to beat Cowbridge this season and were hoping to repeat the feat when they made the long journey to the Vale of Glamorgan.

Visiting skipper Oli Furneaux won the toss and asked the home team to bat first. Ben Wright and Chris Willey made the ideal start, putting on 101 for the first wicket when Willey was out for 39.

The rest of the Cowbridge batsmen were unable to carry on the good work, with only three others getting into double figures as the Bronwydd attack brought the game back under control.

But former Glamorgan man Wright showed his undoubted class by carrying his bat for a run-a-ball 140. Matthew Vaughan took 3-43 and Callum Collins-Davies 3-30 as the hosts closed on 246-7.

The Bronwydd reply got off to a good start, but on 30 James Cale was stumped with the score on 52.

George Gleeson (28) and Gareth John (45) batted with ease and an eye on the score to keep Bronwydd not far behind the required run rate, but from 144-3 Bronwydd lost six wickets for just nine runs, with only John, Gleeson and Furneaux (19) making any impression on the target.

A late flurry from Matthew Vaughan and Callum Collins-Davies, who put on 29 for the last wicket, gave Bronwydd an extra batting point but the innings closed on 182.
