Big hitters to fore as event goes down to wire

-

A TEXAS Scramble was the order of the day at Derllys Court Golf Club as the fine weather and fast fairways saw the long hitters make the most of the opportunity to go for the green.

With a slight tweak in the rules that offered more drives off the tee to the lower handicappers, it was no surprise that the section’s two longest hitters and lowest handicappers, Graham Owens and John Hartley, finished among the leading groups.

With Martyn Shadrach, Martin Davies and Frank Wride also playing excellent golf, four birdies saw them claim second place from Hartley, Peter Webb and Brian Newcombe, who had to settle for third place.

With Owens and partners John Hendra and Dave Wood also recording four birdies, the top two finished with the same gross scores of 67, and the same handicap allowance of 5.8 to be deducted.

Countback worked in favour of Owens and his team, who took top spot virtue of two birdies on the back nine, including the 18th.

This week the seniors return to Dawn Patrol League action with round seven of the competition.

They also welcome Cardigan seniors to the club for a team match.
