Pair ‘devastated’ and ‘in disbelief’ after decision
IN a statement released after his sacking, Professor Marc Clement said he was “devastated and immensely saddened”.
He said: “I feel wholly let down by the institution I have strived so hard to support and progress over the last decade.
“Despite my best efforts to clear my good name, I have been constantly frustrated by the university and its team of London lawyers who have put every possible hurdle in the way of me properly addressing the accusations made.
“For almost a year, I have been left unable to speak with friends and colleagues or to respond to the myriad stories in the press, both leaked and official. My health has been greatly impacted and the strain on my family has been immense.
“Despite remaining signed off as unfit to work, I was left with little choice but to attend a disciplinary hearing on Monday where as part of my defence, I repeated my request for other evidence to be located and considered and for the flawed investigation process to be reopened. Despite this, I have been dismissed. As I still have recourse to an appeal, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further at this time.”
A statement released by Profesor Richard B Davies said he was in “disbelief” at the decision and claimed continuing ill health had prevented him from fully defending himself. He added: “I believe that the process adopted by the university both prior to and during my suspension has been grossly unfair and unreasonable.
“During the entire process, I have been gagged by the university from not only making any public statements but also from discussing the case with anyone, whether within the university or otherwise. As such, I have been prevented from seeking support and/or evidence that would have assisted in proving that the allegations against me have no basis.
“It is only now, following my dismissal, that I am able to make any manner of public comment.
“I will be appealing this decision and will thereafter take such formal action as is open to me to clear my name and seek to restore the reputation that individuals within the university have sought to tarnish.”
