More joy for Raiders as quartet land Wales call

Llanelli Star - - RUGBY & RACING -

THE new feelgood factor surrounding West Wales Raiders continued after four of their players were named in Wales’s elite train-on squad.

Head coach John Kear will use the 35-man squad to select players for this autumn’s 9s World Cup and next year’s European Championships.

The ultimate goal is to create a competitive side for the World Cup in two years’ time.

The Raiders quartet are Morgan Evans, Matthew Morgan, Steve Parry and Liam Rice-Wilson.

Morgan and Rice-Wilson are among six uncapped players in the squad.

Kear said: “We had a really positive international campaign last year and it was great to see a young, hungry Welsh side performing well.

“It’s really important that we spend time together and continue to develop, so that’s the reason we’ve formed this elite group.

“We already have a number of players who are performing well at the top level, but we have plenty of talent and potential throughout the squad.”

The call-ups for the Raiders aces come with the club still celebrating the 44-16 victory over Coventry Bears in Betfred League 1 earlier this month, a win that ended a winless sequence of 43 games stretching back to 2017.

And they will hope to build on that performance when they host second-placed Newcastle Thunder at Stebonheath Park on Saturday (3pm).
