Parents could be eligible for up to £200 for school uniform

PARENTS and carers are being reminded that they could be eligible to receive up to £200 to buy school uniform and equipment for their children ahead of the start of the autumn term

Llanelli AM Lee Waters is urging parents and carers to contact their local authority to see if they are eligible for the Pupil Development Grant (PDG) before the start of the new school year.

Government funding means that eligible pupils can apply for £125 to buy school uniform, equipment, sports kit and kit for activities outside of school for their child.

Mr Waters said: “Pupils should not miss out on opportunities or feel excluded because of their personal circumstances. Everyone should be encouraged to aim high and be properly supported to achieve.”

“This money is to help pupils in Llanelli and Carmarthenshire reach their full potential. I would urge parents and carers to find out whether they are eligible.”

Carmarthenshire Council said they have received 297 applications in 2018 and so far for 2019/20 it had received 20 applications but stressed there was plenty of time as the closing window for applications is not until January 31 next year.

Through the pupil development grant, the Welsh Government provides £125 for students eligible for free school meals to buy uniforms and other equipment.

Eligible year seven pupils are also entitled to a grant of £200 to help with the costs when beginning secondary school.

Minister for Education Kirsty Williams said last month: “Families will know how expensive new uniforms can be.

“This guidance puts a statutory responsibility on schools to consider the affordability, access and availability when setting their school uniform and appearance policy.”
