DOCTOR’S NOTE

-

GOOD news about drinking coffee. Previous studies have suggested that coffee may play a role in the hardening of arteries. But new research by Queen Mary University of London refutes this.

Scientists examined the arteries of 8,412 UK coffee drinkers and found their taste for a brew actually made no difference to their arteries.

After taking age, weight and smoking into account, they found the arteries of the heavy drinking participants (who drank more than three cups a day, and in a few cases, as many as 25) were no harder than those who drank up to three cups a day.

“Our research indicates coffee isn’t as bad for the arteries as previous studies would suggest,” said co-author Dr Kenneth Fung.
