Murphy rules the roost at Ffos Las

- Phil Bell

LAST Monday saw the return of flat racing in Ffos Las and it was certainly a busy week, with racing on Monday and Thursday.

Title-chasing Oisin Murphy celebrated a four-timer which put him back in the lead for the Flat Jockeys Championship, which finishes in October. He won aboard Perfect Charm, Berlin Tango, Handytalk and Toshima. The last of the quartet won a maiden hurdle here only 11 days previously, then switched codes to win on the flat for trainer Robert Stephens, who trains just outside Chepstow.

On Thursday evening Ffos Las held their first Gin & Jazz evening. It was another glorious summer’s evening where a gin and tonic could be enjoyed while listening to the popular jazz band, the Hipcats.

It was a successful evening for trainer Archie Watson and jockey Hollie Doyle, who had a treble of winners in the name of Fashion Free, Inspired Thoughts and Perfect Charm, who was winning at Ffos Las for the second time in three days.

Local trainers and jockeys enjoyed a recent trip to Perth where Game Line won a handicap hurdle for Christian Williams, winning for the second time this summer. The day before, Tim Vaughan saddled Danboru to win a handicap chase under stable conditional jockey Charlie Price and doubled up with Cape Hideaway, who took the last race on the card, the Amateur riders handicap hurdle with Mr M Galligan on board, who celebrated his fourth win under rules.

The next race meeting in Ffos Las is next Tuesday (August 13) and is a Picnic Raceday. Tickets are only £12 in advance and there is a fantastic offer on family viewing boxes for only £150, where you can bring your picnic (no alcohol) into a box and enjoy the racing action from up high.

And don’t forget our feature meeting of the year, which is the Heatforce Ladies’ Day on Friday, August 23. There is the popular ABBA tribute band Bjorn Again playing after the last race.

Tickets for this are just £22 in advance. For more information and tickets head to www.ffoslasracecourse.com or ring the office on 01554 811092.
