PLAYERS are going through the pain barrier in preparation for the start of the Costcutter Football League season next week.

The action gets under way in division one on Tuesday, with teams in the second tier starting the following day and reserve sides in the third division kicking off on Saturday, August 31.

Champions St Dogmaels have been in training for six weeks, the sessions including staminasapping runs on the dunes at Poppit Sands.

A boost is the arrival of midfielder Josh Mellor from neighbours Cardigan Town, and the remainder of the players are available.

Manager Steve Williams said: “We had a brilliant season and hope we can successfully defend our title.”

Consistency was a problem for Newcastle Emlyn, who finished fifth, but the signing of eight players from the Costcutter, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire leagues has generated optimism.

In recent friendlies the Reds bagged a 3-0 win over Pembrokeshire League division two champions Fishguard Sports and had an identical result against Aberaeron.

Boss Owain Thomas said: “We are ready for the challenge and hope to make an impact.”

Last term Crannog captured Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies, were Easter Monday League Cup finalists and division one runners-up.

After taking Lampeter Town to third place, player-boss Terry Witts has stood down and been succeeded by former New Quay and Aberaeron player-manager Jonion Evans.

The new boss said: “A few new players have joined and we also have a number of talented youngsters coming through.”

In his first season as Llandysul manager, Gwynfor Edwards led the Swallows to the Easter Monday Cup and is hoping for further success.

“We beat every team in the league last season and after finishing fourth our aim this time has got to be the title,” he said.

Cardigan Town have midfield dynamo James Evans in the hot seat and the Magpies have a crop of emerging players.

Ffostrasol will be out to improve, while Felinfach, Llanboidy, Dewi Stars and Aberporth are others to consider in the chase for silverware.
