Surprise as Cardis storm to title glory

-

A GRANDSTAND finish to the season saw Cardigan lift the Ceredigion Bowling Association title at the expense of reigning champions Lampeter, who faltered in the final two games.

Going into the last two fixtures Lampeter appeared on course to retain the title, but they came unstuck twice.

In the penultimate game between the top two on the Gwbert Road green in Cardigan, the home side eased to victory and banked 12 points, which left Colin James and his side a point clear going into the final day.

To be crowned champions Cardigan needed 13 points from their visit to bottom side Queen’s Road in Aberystwyth.

The Cardis plundered the required points as they won 7960, but as it transpired the title was handed to them on a plate as Lampeter went down by eight shots against visitors Tregaron and ended the season 10 points adrift of the new kingpins.

Rink scores (Queen’s Road names first): E. Sandford 16 Paul Monders 23; Jamie James 14 Chris Rogers 17; Brian Davies 17 Kevin James 17; Martin Phillips 13 Marc James 22.
