KIDWELLY STAY ON TITLE TRACK

-

A team of 24 karate students from Llanelli-based Seishin Karate went to Northampton to compete in the British Institute of Karate national championships and came away with 35 medals, the biggest medal haul of any club taking part. The club, which is run by 2nd Dan Alan Bowen, runs sessions in Llangennech Community Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays and in Swiss Valley Community Hall on Saturdays and Sundays. DESPITE poor overnight conditions, most games in the Llanelli and District Bowling League went ahead on Saturday afternoon, and there were few surprises.

The top two teams in the Premier division and division one both recorded victories, while in division two the two leading teams met in a promotion showdown.

Current league champions Kidwelly Town visited Ammanford Park and came away with 12 of the 14 available points, keeping them on track to retain the title.

Chasing Graig Merthyr were shorthanded on their visit to Parc y Dre but still managed a convincing win, matching Kidwelly’s points score.

Division one leaders Brynhyfryd took maximum points from visiting Calsonic Wanderers, and Dafen Welfare’s single-shot win at home to Burry Port seems to have secured promotion for the two teams barring a disaster in their final few games.

At the top of division two, Tybie hosted Cross Hands and won all four rinks and are streets ahead of the following teams.

Cross Hands remain in second place, but Tumble have closed the gap and may well pounce on any slip-ups.

Loughor and Pontarddulais face the possibility of relegation. Loughor’s loss to Gorseinon on Saturday leaves them at the foot of the Premier division alongside struggling Carmarthen, both needing big wins from their final matches to stay up

However, both face stern tests this weekend with visits to Llanelli and Kidwelly respectively.

Pontarddulais seem certain to be relegated for the second season in succession. With only one win so far this year, they are well out of touch with the other teams in division one.

This week, local qualifiers are competing in the National Competition finals at Llandrindod Wells and on Sunday morning the County Championship side face the Vale of Glamorgan at the same venue in the semifinal of the County Championship.

The winner progresses to the final in the afternoon.
