LIFEBOAT crews helped four separate groups of people who were stranded off the Llanelli coast.

In total, 12 people and one dog got into trouble after 2.30pm last Tuesday.

Burry Port RNLI was first called to assist coastguards after a group of three people became stranded at Pembrey Old Harbour.

While crew members were there, two cyclists also became stranded. Both groups were taken safely to the shore.

However, just as the lifeboat got back to Burry Port Harbour, it was called back out to help a group of six people who were stranded at Machynys, in Llanelli. Another person, with a dog, was also in danger in the same area.

A second lifeboat was then launched to help the people safely back to shore.

A spokesman from Burry Port RNLI said: “At 2.27pm (on Tuesday, June 2) we were paged by Milford Haven UK Coastguard to assist persons cut off by the incoming tide, in Pembrey Old Harbour.

“Our ILB was launched by 2.37pm, and on scene within minutes, firstly ferrying a group of three back to safety, and then a further two cyclists had also become stranded, so they were also ferried, with bicycles, back to safety on the shore.

“As our volunteer crew arrived back in Burry Port Harbour and prepared for recovery, another call came in for a group of about six people cut off at Machynys, in Llanelli, plus a person with a dog also in danger in the same area.

“At this point our bigger Atlantic 85 lifeboat was also launched to assist, and both lifeboats headed for the area.

“The group of six were observed as they managed to cross back to safety, and the person and dog also were watched as they crossed back to shore.”
