Call for greater efforts to stamp out fly-tipping

GREATER efforts are needed to stamp out fly-tipping in parts of Llanelli.

Town councillor Sean Rees has called on Ca rma r t h e n s h i r e Council to take enforcement action in areas where fly-tippers have dumped rubbish in recent weeks.

Two hotspots include Bryn Road in Seaside and at Delta Lakes in Machynys.

Mr Rees took to Twitter to highlight the issue, posting photos and alerting the county council to the latest unlawful dumping.

The first incident he raised was at Bryn Road, which keeps happening, despite the rubbish on this occasion being in black and blue bags – it doesn’t belong there.

Mr Rees, who represents the Glanymor ward, tweeted: “Some very inconsiderate person keeps dumping rubbish on the pavement at the top of Bryn Road, Llanelli.”

Turning to the council in his tweet, Mr Rees asked the authority: “Could this latest mess be cleared up and the bags investigated to see if addresses can be identified please, there is no excuse for this.”

That incident was on December 28, while on January 4 Mr Rees was made aware of more flytipping at Delta Lakes.

He tweeted a photo of the dumped rubbish and said: “Some people just simply don’t care and have no consideration for our environment.

“Only solution here is stronger enforcement and measures put in place to catch these culprits.”

Speaking generally about the problem facing Llanelli, Mr Rees said: “Fly-tipping is probably one of the biggest issues that residents raise with me.

“Sadly, a minority of people continue to ruin it for everyone and there is simply no excuse for it.

“We have all seen a growing number of hotspots across our area, all of which continue to be reported.”

In recent years, Mr Rees has set up the Keep Glanymor Tidy Volunteers Group which covers the Seaside, North Dock, New Dock, Morfa and Machynys areas.

The group have been growing in number and have been involved in a number of litter picks and clean-up operations, including taking direct action on fly-tipping, littering and dog fouling.

Mr Rees added: “We continue to have discussions with the county council’s environmental and public protection teams.

“We are calling for a zero tolerance approach which is urgently needed in order to catch these culprits, with stronger enforcement being the only way forward. People who continue to not dispose of their rubbish in the right way and those who are fly-tipping will be issued with letters and where necessary with fixed penalty notices.

“I’m really grateful to everyone in our community who have been so proactive in raising incidents and for understanding that public health must always be a priority.”

Councillor Philip Hughes, Carmarthenshire Council’s executive board member for enforcement and public protection, said: “There is never an excuse for fly-tipping; it is unsightly, dangerous, and costly to clear.

“There are proper means for everyone to dispose of their waste responsibly, it’s a shame that some people choose not to use these facilities.

“If anyone knows of someone fly-tipping I would encourage them to report it to us.

“We will continue to take action on anyone caught flouting the law.”
