AN elderly man and a toddler were rescued after getting stuck in the mud at Llanelli Beach.

Around 100 people stood and watched as emergency services arrived at the scene and attempted to rescue the pair on Wednesday afternoon.

The toddler and elderly man were stuck in quicksand.

Some patches off Llanelli Beach are notorious for turning into quicksand and members of the public are regularly warned to take care.

Members of the public called the police and the emergency services when they realised the pair were in trouble. The emergency services were quick to arrive on the scene.

But attempts to gain access to the beach were hampered by locked bollards at the slipway entrance.

Anthony Brain, who was at the scene, said the emergency services arrived quickly and calmed the scene.

He said: “A grandfather took his grand-daughter for a walk when they got stuck in the mud.

“Luckily the tide was out so they didn’t have to worry about that and that meant the emergency services were able to take their time.

“There were around 100 people watching at the scene, but the paramedics had everything under control.

“There are no signs warning people how dangerous the coast is so the public will never really know.

“They were only a few hundred yards from the coast.

“Initially, the emergency services couldn’t get close as the bollards were blocking entry to the beach, but luckily they managed to get there in the end.”

The incident happened near the front of the St Elli’s Bay bistro/café at North Dock.

Paramedics checked the man and toddler as soon as they were back on safe ground.

A spokeswoman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Police were called just after 2.45pm today to a report of a man and a child stuck in mud on Llanelli Beach. Police, HM Coastguard and the fire service attended. Both are now safe.”
