DAMAGE has been caused to a popular roundhouse at a Carmarthenshire beauty spot that is regularly used for training by a woodland charity.

The wooden roundhouse at Mynydd Mawr Park in Tumble in the Gwendraeth Valley has been attacked by vandals.

Photographs of the damage show support beams and sections of the canopy roof destroyed and graffiti on the roundhouse.

Litter was also strewn across the area and it is understood that a toilet was also damaged in the attack.

The park is owned and managed by Carmarthenshire Council The roundhouse is often used by woodland charity Tir Coed to hold training sessions.

Tir Coed’s Carmarthenshire co-ordinator Nancy Hardy said: “We are disappointed to see the damage caused to our roundhouse shelter at Mynydd Mawr Woodland Park.

“Out staff and volunteers have worked incredibly hard to maintain and improve the shelter and surrounding area, particularly during lockdown when extra effort was made to ensure the roundhouse could be used in a safe way in line with Government regulations.”

She added: “Our purpose is to encourage everyone to reconnect with nature and enjoy spending time in our beautiful local woodlands, such as Mynydd Mawr Woodland Park.

“It is particularly saddening to see a facility that has been made available to everyone, such as the roundhouse, has been damaged.

“We will continue to work hard to provide opportunities for everyone to enjoy our beautiful countryside and woodlands.”

Carmarthenshire Council’s head of leisure, Ian Jones said: “This is a blatant act of vandalism and has been reported to the police. The cost of repairing this could be spent in better ways.

“The shelter is regularly used by a charity for training sessions, which will now have to be cancelled until the repair work has been completed.”
