Top bowlers get call for Games trials

-

A NUMBER of local bowlers have been selected for the first trial for next year’s Commonwealth Games which are being held in Birmingham.

The trial is to be held in midJune.

David Kingdon and Nicky Collins of Kidwelly Town are joined by Matthew Partridge and Robert Chisholm of Parc y Dre in the men’s trial, while Sara Nicholls of Llandeilo and Hannah Williams of Blue Anchor are named in the ladies’ trial. Rebecca Williams of Llangennech & Bryn is included as a reserve.

The visually impaired and disability squad managed by Swansea’s Stephen Rees also sees a good local representation with Ammanford’s Shaun Peregrine, Llanelli’s Dylan Williams and Havelock Park’s Bob Wakeman and Chris Spriggs included.

One of the two coaches is Byron John of Pontarddulais, who plays out of the Carmarthen club and who was one of the two directors for the bronze medallists in the mixed para-sport pairs held at Gold Coast in Australia in 2018.

Last Saturday’s bowls matches were all affected by poor weather, leaving teams already having to make rearrangements.

Hopefully, this weekend will see an improvement.

In the qualifying sections for the National Club Championship, Section 5 has seen all but one of the clubs opt out for 2021. It leaves Crusaders Bowls Club to automatically go through to the National Open draw, giving them an away game in South Glamorgan in July.

Saturday matches WBA National Club Championship (Carruthers Shield) qualifying matches Section 1: Carmarthen v Parc William; New Lodge v Graig Merthyr.

Section 3: Havelock Park v Gowerton.
