Bronwydd off the mark as Dafydd takes family bragging rights

-

BRONWYDD defied the wet weather – and Llandysul – to record their first victory of the South Wales Cricket Association division one season on Saturday.

The game was given the go-ahead after numerous inspections and discussions between umpires, groundstaff and captains.

Bronwydd skipper Oli Furneaux lost the toss and Ben Edkins asked the visitors to bat first.

James Cale and Tom Davies made a cautious start by putting on 40 for the first wicket in 16 overs. When Davies was out for 11, he was replaced by Josh Rencken.

He and Cale batted with great authority and took the score to 76 when the next wicket fell.

Sam Tobin (16) accelerated the run rate by putting on 42 with Cale in just seven overs.

Cale was out for 74 but the final total of 137-7 was probably 20 short of what Bronwydd would have wanted.

Rhidian Harries took 3-37 for Llandysul and Llewelyn Hughes 2-24.

There was a family rivalry in the Llandysul reply as the home side’s Bleddyn and Carwyn Morgan faced their fellow triplet Dafydd, who was spearheading the Bronwydd attack.

The Bronwydd sibling had the first laugh when he bowled Carwyn for a duck in the second over.

The big wickets of Gary Williams (26) and Edkins (31) were captured and the only other batsmen to reach double figures were Bleddyn Morgan (15) and Iestyn Evans (12).

Dafydd Morgan took 4-26 and Cale 3-19 as Bronwydd won by 17 runs. Rencken, James Dickson and Tom Gleeson were also among the wickets in a victory that lifted Bronwydd to seventh in the table. Llandysul have dropped to fourth.
