LOOKING TOUGH FOR WANDERERS

-

CARMARTHEN Wanderers are in increasingly desperate trouble at the foot of South Wales Premier League 2.

The Trinity Fields side lost their sixth game of the season when they went down at fellow strugglers Gorseinon at the weekend.

It left them seven points adrift of Gors at the foot of the table, with Malpas – who the Wanderers face on Saturday – a further point ahead.

The battle to avoid relegation looks like it could be fought out between the three.

The Wanderers actually got off to a good start at the Welfare Ground and had the hosts in all sorts of trouble at 70-6.

But a hard-hitting 51 from Christopher Mee – he struck four sixes in his 51 – helped Gorseinon recover to 149 all out.

Chris Turrell took 3-28 with Ian Hughes, Owain Binding and Robbie Crawford all taking two wickets.

But the Wanderers reply got off to a bad start when Crawford was dismissed for two – and it went downhill from there.

Daniel Jones top-scored with 30, but the only other player to reach double figures was Leighton Walters with 11.

Nishaanth Dalavaye took 4-23 and Gafyn Donald 3-12 as the visitors were dismissed for just 84, sending them spinning to a 65-run defeat.

Meanwhile, Carmarthen Wanderers Seconds maintained their unbeaten run with a five-wicket success at home to Gorseinon in their Premier League West match.

Gorseinon won the toss and elected to bat and were under immediate pressure as they lost four quick wickets.

Liam Rogers, who took 2-10 in nine overs, and Owain Bailey with 2-23 were the pick of the home bowlers.

Youngsters Kai Summers and Garmon Dyfri picked up two wickets apiece and with Alfie Connick also chipping in with a wicket, Gorseinon slipped to 114 all out in the 39th over.

The Wanderers chased down the target in 19 overs, with Andrew Harley (17), Andrew Edwards (22), Bailey (23) and Rogers (24 not out) all making contributions.

Skipper Ian Taylor said: “It was another good performance, but we will have to up our game this week as we entertain unbeaten league leaders Clydach.

“The boys are looking forward to the game which will really test us, and a positive result will see us head the league table once again.”

Kidwelly Town Seconds have pulled out of division seven of the South Wales Cricket Association after struggling to field a side this season.

All the points from their games have been expunged.

Kidwelly have a thriving junior section and are hoping to re-enter the league in division eight in 2022.
