SIXTEEN Welsh pupils travelled to Glasgow to represent the Welsh Schools Association at the 2021 British Schools Indoor Combined Events International.
The Welsh team were up against the top runners, jumpers and throwers from their counterparts in England, Ireland and Scotland.
Jessica Lee from Ysgol Dyffryn Taf in Whitland won her second Welsh vest in less than three months.
Finishing fourth individually with 3,545 points, she helped the Welsh Schools Under-18 girls win bronze medals in the team event.
Lee’s pentathlon results: 60m hurdles (9.34), 800m (2:32:10), long jump (5.79m), high hump (1.63m), shot put (9.26m).
Closer to home, the indoor season for junior athletes in Wales got under way with the Welsh Athletics Junior Indoor Open at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in
Cardiff.
The event incorporated the 2021-22 West Wales Regional Indoor Championships.
Gold, silver and bronze medals were won by Beatrice Morgan in the 200m (27.93) and long jump (4.32m), Luned Defis in the high jump (1.35m) and long jump (3.86m), Lily Jones in the long jump (3.47m) and high jump (1.26m), Mari Wilson in the high jump (1.35m) and 300m (52.77), Kodi Penn-O’Hare in the 200m (32.32), Joshua Peel in the 200m (28.94), Harrison Garcia in the 200m (24.35) and 400m (54.27) and Ewan Williams in the 200m (29.95).
Darcy Coslett (200m, 30.02 and long jump, 3.53m) and Keira Penn-O’Hare (200m, 33.10 and 300m, 56.32) also competed.
Day two of the Welsh Athletics Indoor Open for under-13, under-15 and under-17 age groups is due to take place on Sunday, January 9.
West Wales medals will be up for grabs in the 60m and 60m hurdles, 800m and 1500m as well as the long jump, shot and pole vault.
At the Cardiff Met Christmas Classic Grand Prix, endurance athletes Ben Thomas (8:22.99), Dafydd Jones (8:26.76), Frank Morgan (8:31.88) and Iestyn Williams (8:38.58) lined up in the 3000m.
Thomas and Jones’s times were confirmed as new Carmarthen Harriers club records for the senior men and under-20 men’s age groups.
Lewis Evans and Ellie Loweth were in action in the 60m sprint where they crossed the line in 7.25 and 8.23 respectively.
Loweth also ran 44.22 in the women’s 300m.
In the field, Beca Roberts competed in the women’s triple jump and recorded a best of 11.33m in the second round.
At the Llandeilo Festival of Senses 5K, Iwan Thomas was the winner in a time of 17 minutes 53 seconds.
