MEDALS GALORE FOR ATHLETES

WEST Wales athletes were out in force as the Welsh Athletics Indoor Championsh­ips made a welcome return to Cardiff for the first time in two years.

The National Indoor Athletics Centre at Cardiff Met’s Cyncoed campus hosted the Welsh Athletics Senior and Under-15 Indoor Championsh­ips at the end of January, followed by the Welsh Championsh­ips at under-13, under-17 and under-20 level a week later.

More than 600 club sprinters, endurance runners, jumpers and throwers from Wales and England participat­ed, with personal bests and championsh­ip best performanc­es achieved.

Carmarthen Harriers and Llanelli Athletics Club results:

Lewis Evans 60m (7.43); Harrison Garcia 60m (7.64), 200m (23.77) and 400m (52.87). Jessica Lee 60m (7.80), 200m (25.64) and long jump (5.67m); Ellie Loweth 60m (8.23) and 200m (27.36).

Elli May Williams 60m (8.03); Beatrice Morgan 60m (8.21), 60m hurdles (9.98), 200m (27.62) and long jump (4.30m).

Luned Defis 60m hurdles (11.42), long jump (3.90m) and high jump (1.40m); Carter Norris 200m (25.84); Mari Wilson 300m (50.17) and high jump (1.35m); Iwan Wilson 800m (2:11.03); Lyra Roberts 800m (2:46.90), 1500m (5:35.84) and pole vault (1.90m).

Esme Lynock 800m (2:47.58) and 1500m (5:36.15); Toby Anthony 800m (2:40.66); Amelie Campion 800m (3:06.37); Ben Thomas 1500m (3:52.39); Jake Lynock 1500m (4:29.25) and 3000m (9:43.24); Amelia Williams 3000m (11:44.41); Arianna Protheroe 3000m (13:01.63); Osian Roberts high jump (1.95m).

Beca Roberts triple jump (11.49m); Connor Handford pole vault (3.02m); Cerys Angharad Jones pole vault (2.10m); James Sloyan shot put (9.88m) and Lily Jones shot put (6.08m).

The total medal tally was 24, with five gold, 10 silver and nine bronze medals won.

Elsewhere, Osian Roberts won his first Welsh senior vest at the Dynamic New Athletic Indoor Event, created by European Athletics in Glasgow.

Roberts, one of the youngest athletes involved, was selected to compete

in the men’s high jump and cleared a best of 1.90m.

The Welsh team competed at the Emirates Arena against England, Scotland, Ireland, Spain and Turkey.

This Saturday sees the first cross country competitio­n of the year to be held in Wales.

Eight districts – Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff & Vale, Dyfed, Powys, Eryri, Glamorgan Valleys, North East Wales and South East Wales – will be represente­d at the Welsh Secondary Schools and Colleges Cross Country Championsh­ips at Penlan Arena in Brecon.

The races will also host a trial for Welsh teams to compete at the SIAB Schools Cross Country Internatio­nal, which is being held in Pembrey Country Park next month.
