Thomas strikes to hand Cwm victory

-

THERE is something about playing under the lights at Grenig Park that brings out the best in Cwmamman United.

In a season where they have struggled to close out games or just never really got going, they have a 100 per cent record in the three night matches they have played at home in Ardal League South West.

And they were fully deserving of this 2-1 victory over Penrhiwceiber Rangers.

Having suffered a heavy defeat at Penrhiwceiber earlier in the season, home fans feared the worst when the away side had a chance in the first minute.

However, Kai Rees was well positioned to stop it, and Cwm dominated the next 20 minutes.

But against the run of play a break through the middle saw Jaymie Wearn give the visitors the lead as he slotted past Rees.

Ceiber started to grow in confidence, but with Luke Sherbon, Ross Morgan and Kyle Ashford excellent in midfield, Cwm kept creating and Ryan Hurlow and Scott Jewell had good attempts saved.

At the start of the second half Rees had to make two very good saves.

Gareth Howarth and Terry Maynard were working hard in the centre of defence while Travis James and Nathan Davies constantly supported attacks, and it was Davies who slotted home the equaliser in the 52nd minute.

A fierce Sherbon shot forced an excellent save before on 71 minutes, a rebound from the oncoming keeper saw Ryan Thomas calmly slot the ball into the empty net from 25 metres out.

Cwm had some nerve-tingling moments but the energy of substitutes Ryan Foschi, Cam Isaac and Calem Rees kept them on the front foot.

In the 89th minute Jewell was dismissed, but Cwm held their nerve for a much-needed win.

This Friday Cwm travel to Llandarcy to play West End at 7.30pm.
