Flippin’ great way to help

- JADE EVANS journal.star@walesonline.co.uk

LLANELLI town centre businesses had a flippin’ great time as the annual Ymlaen Llanelli pancake race took place in aid of a local charity.

The event consisted of three relay race heats and a final, and ultimately saw the Asda Flippers take home the trophy, knocking the reigning champions from Davies Craddock off the top spot.

Organised by Ymlaen Llanelli Business Improvement District (Bid), the pancake race is hosted in Stepney Street on Shrove Tuesday each year and sees teams of four from town centre businesses flipping pancakes as they run the relay.

Six teams took part this year - from Asda, Davies Craddock, Llanelly House, Tinopolis, Llanelli Town Council and Llanelli Market.

Tinopolis were on track to win their heat against the Asda team, only to lose it on the line as their pancake went rogue and landed on the floor.

There was fierce competition between the three finalists, but another pancake tragedy saw Davies Craddock finish in third, with Llanelli Town Council in second, hot on the heels of the Asda Flippers.

Entry fees for the race and donations from spectators raised over £120 for Morgan’s Fund, who are raising money for three children’s charities that have helped their two-year-old son Morgan in his fight against cancer.

Morgan’s father, Matthew Ridler, works in Gomer Williams solicitors in the town centre, and the family offered congratulations and thanks for the race’s fundraising efforts.

Chair of Ymlaen Llanelli Lesley Richards said there was a great atmosphere.

She added: “The teams were all excited to get stuck into some friendly competition, and it was great to get businesses together to support a good local cause. We’re thrilled to have raised so much, and we can’t thank everyone enough for their generosity.”

Town crier Rev Eldon Phillips refereed the races while dressed as Saint David to commemorate the doubleup of special event dates.

The Tinopolis team wore their Welsh costumes and Lady Stepney leant a hand to the Llanelly House team.

Ymlaen Llanelli’s next public event is Llanelli Dinosaur Eggstravaganza on Tuesday April 12, which will see lifelike dinos putting on a show in Stepney Square from noon.
