Late goals deny Cwm

-

CWMAMMAN United went down 4-2 to Ynyshir Albion in a rip-roaring Ardal League South West encounter.

Cwm manager Ryan Thomas will have been pleased at how his side took the game to the visitors considering they had to make significant changes because of Covid and injuries.

Ynyshir are serious contenders for the league title and are in the semi-finals of two cups, so it was no surprise they settled the quicker of the two sides.

The visitors had the first chance early on, but on 17 minutes Cwm’s Calem Rees fired over the bar from the edge of the box.

A fine pass from Grant Rees put the ball across goal, and Ryan Hurlow’s shot hit the post,

The deadlock was broken when a free-kick into the Cwm box was flicked on and Matthew Crutch headed home.

The lead could have been doubled, only for goalkeeper Kai Rees to pull off a fine save.

Hurlow had a powerful shot saved by Jason Pritchard, then a Gareth Howarth header came off the bar and Hurlow calmly tapped home.

Cwm expected to go in allsquare at the break, but the league’s top scorer Liam Eason netted in first-half injury time to restore Ynyshir’s lead.

With full-backs Travis James and Elian James having strong games and Geraint and Grant Rees and Ashford working hard in the middle, Cwm equalised in the 54th minute when Jordan Simpson drove into the opposition box and fired home.

The game turned in the 75th minute when a failed clearance was seized upon and a perfect lob over keeper Rees by Morgan saw Ynyshir restore their lead.

The last 15 minutes saw Cwm pushing for an equaliser and they moved Nathan McNeil up front from central defence.

But after a few good opportunities were wasted, Jacob Matthews broke away in the 93rd minute to seal the points.

On Saturday Cwm make the trip to second-placed Cardiff Draconians.
