Sad loss The sudden passing of Liz Smith, 79, at her Llannon Road home on March 10 has come as a great shock to family and friends alike. The retired Pontyberem school teacher displayed an unceasing zest for life in all its variations. She is mourned by Colin, her husband of 56 years, her son Huw, daughter-in-law Wendy and grand-children Marged and Cynyr.
A former community councillor and long-time governor of Pontyberem School, this elegant lady devoted herself to numerous causes and organisations, often linked to promoting Welsh culture and education.
A devoted member of Capel Caersalem, where her funeral took place, Mrs Smith was widely known for her connections with Merched y Wawr, Menter, campaigning successfully to save the village library and until the evening before her unexpected death working, despite physical infirmity in recent years, to actively help with appeals to aid the people of Ukraine. Her caring nature and natural vivacity has been warmly recalled by her former pupils, at home and abroad, on the internet.
Support for the Ukraine At their March gathering community councillors unanimously agreed to express their solidarity, sympathy and support for the war-torn suffering people of the Ukraine by writing to their Ambassador in London. So, too, the Ukrainian flag flies from Pontyberem Memorial Hall in honour of its citizens. Councillors are awaiting to hear what arrangements are being made by governmental agencies, including the county council, in providing accommodation for fleeing refugees, comprising mainly women and children. Events are being kept under review.
