Gale brace puts Otters on track for an away win

-

NARBERTH claimed a 27-8 victory at Trebanos in the Admiral National Championship.

The win puts the Otters in sixth place in the table.

Trebanos started well and kept Narberth pinned in their own half, but against the run of play full-back Nick Gale intercepted a pass close to his own line and ran 80 metres to score wide out.

Fly-half Jonathan Rogers converted.

The home team continued to dominate, but excellent defence from the Otters kept them out.

Then from a scrum on halfway, Rogers chipped the ball over the top of the Trebanos defensive line and the ball was collected by centre Jake Jenkins, who raced upfield.

When he was tackled the ball was recycled and lock Rhys Williams passed to the supporting Gale, who again scored in the corner.

Rogers again converted. Trebanos continued to attack at every opportunity, but when they tried to run out of defence the ball was dropped and Otters winger Josh Davies was quick to kick it downfield. He regathered close to the home try line and was able to force his way over with two defenders hanging on to him. Rogers once again converted.

Before the break Rogers kicked a penalty and Trebanos fly-half Rhys Harries responded to leave the visitors 24-3 ahead.

Throughout the second half Trebanos continued to look dangerous with ball in hand, but strong defence from flankers Tom Curry and Richie Rees and centres Jake Jenkins and Rheon James stopped the home team in their tracks.

Trebanos eventually managed to get over the Otters line, but the visitors had the last word when Rogers kicked a penalty.

Rhys Williams was named man of the match. Narberth head to second-placed Bedwas on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Ammanford pushed leaders Skewen all the way in One West Central before falling to a 28-24 defeat.

Laugharne were defeated 22-20 by Haverfordwest in a top-of-the-table clash in Three West A.

On Saturday, One West leaders Yr Hendy face a stern test of their title credentials when they make the trip to fourth-placed Crymych.

Newcastle Emlyn, who lie third in the table and have two games in hand on Hendy, travel to Llanelli Wanderers.

Whitland head to Gowerton, who are back in 10th place.
