BIGYN councillor Philip Warlow has been elected to serve as the next Mayor of Llanelli Town Council.

Cllr Warlow represents Bigyn on both the town council and Carmarthenshire Council.

He was first elected to Llanelli Town Council in May, 2017.

Cllr Warlow was proposed for the office of Mayor by Cllr David Darkin at the annual meeting of the council held at The Old Vicarage.

Cllr Darkin said: “During his time as a councillor, Phil has been a member of many of the council’s committees, including the planning, licensing and consultation committee, the Stebonheath development committee and the Well-being of Future Generations

committee.

“Phil is currently the town council’s representative on Llanelli and District Civic Society and is chairman of Governors for Penygaer School.

“Phil is a passionate patient advocate, supporting many individuals and groups.

“He has been a long-standing member of the Parc Howard Association and was, until relatively recently, a trades union official with Unison.

“I am sure that these experiences will have prepared him for what lies ahead in the role of town mayor, with the support of Cllr Janet Williams as his mayoress.

“I am sure that he is more than ready and able to take on the role of civic head of the council and to meet the new challenges that he will face over the next 12 months.

“The civic side to the office of town mayor continues to be extremely important.

“Firstly, it gives local organisations the opportunity to meet the civic head and learn something about the work of the council.

“Secondly, the mayor – and indeed the council – become aware of the tremendous amount of good work being carried out by such bodies in our local community. “In this way, the close grass-roots relationship which the council has built up over the years with both its electors and others can be main

tained and extended.

“Phil, I have no doubt that you will bring great credit to the council and yourself in discharging all the civic duties which will arise during your mayoral year and I take this opportunity of wishing you and Janet a happy and successful term of office.”

Responding to the council meeting, Cllr Warlow said: “I am very conscious of the great honour you have bestowed upon me and my mayoress Janet – and I would assure you that we will do our very best to carry out our civic duties to reflect credit upon the town council.

“Carrying out the duties of the mayoral office continues the work I have undertaken over many years, assisting residents, patients like myself who have had major heart problems, and giving my best to members of Unison, along with the staff and pupils of Penygaer School, as the chair of governors.

“I look forward to carrying out the duties of the role and to being able to promote our town of Llanelli.”

One of Cllr Warlow’s first duties as mayor was to present the pupils of Penygaer School the cup for being the best out of four schools that took part in the Junior Traders Event in Llanelli town centre last week.

Cllr Warlow’s charities for the year will be Llanelli Mind, Calon+ and Tyisha Foodbank.

Cllr Warlow lives in Andrew Street, Llanelli.

Cllr Nick Pearce, of New Road, Llanelli, will serve as deputy mayor for the next 12 months. Cllr Pearce represents the Elli Ward.
