Warrior helps Tromans to secure a big-race double

-

THERE was some high-quality racing as the second Wales and Border Counties Harness meeting of the season took place at Tai’rgwaith in Ammanford on Saturday.

The first race was the Nursery for youngsters. Zulu Warrior – owned, trained and driven by Mathew Tromans of Newcastle Emlyn – showed she could be a mare to watch this term as she won well on her seasonal debut from Dernol Ebony. Ithon Papa was third.

There was a close finish to the Novice event as Olympics led the field for much of the way. But he was collared on the run-in as the talented Lawless sprinted up to secure a narrow victory.

Luminite, a winner on the opening weekend of the season, was third.

The Grade B race produced another thrilling finale, as the ever-popular Whiskyandwater led for most of the contest. But in the final few yards he was collared by Blythview JJ, driven by Mathew Williams, and the pair just reached the line in front.

Llwyns Mercy claimed third place.

The Baby Novice race, restarted after an accident on the first corner, was won by the pace-setting GG Rogue and David Arrowsmith. They held on by a nose from the fast-finishing pair of Blackfield Okydoky and Lanehouse Girl.

The final race of the day was the Grade A and it witnessed a fine front-running performance from the mare Second Affair, driven once again by Tromans.

Despite being challenged on several occasions, she claimed victory from Lakeside Pan and Ontop Shouder Cuda.

On Saturday Synod Inn plays host at the open track near New Quay in Ceredigion. Racing begins at 1.30pm.
