THE Scarlets have signed two of Wales’s most promising young forwards.

The West Wales region have added former Cardiff Met University captain Iwan Shenton to their squad for the coming season.

The 22-year-old has been training full-time with the squad at Parc y Scarlets this summer after impressing the coaching staff with his performances at university level.

A dynamic carrier, Shenton captained Cardiff Met University in 2021-22 and was nominated as one of the players of the season in the BUCS competition.

Scarlets recruitment and operations officer James Davies said: “Iwan is a player who stood out in BUCS and has really impressed us in training with the senior group.

“He is a player with a lot of potential and we are looking forward to seeing how he develops within the squad over the course of the coming season.”

Shenton started out with Tonna and has featured for Aberavon in the Indigo Premiership.

He said: “This is a massive opportunity for me here at the Scarlets.

“I’ve enjoyed getting stuck into pre-season and it’s been brilliant being able to develop my game and learn from the coaches and the players in the squad.

“I’m looking forward to the season kicking off.”

Llandovery lock Griff Evans has signed a dual contract with the Scarlets for the 2022-23 campaign.

Evans, 21, was a standout player for both Cardiff University and Llandovery RFC last season and featured for the Scarlets Development XV against the Ospreys and Dragons.

Davies added: “Griff played a couple of games with our development side last season and impressed us.

“He has shown a great attitude training alongside the senior players in the squad this summer.

“He is an athletic forward with a good skillset and has been a consistent performer for Llandovery in the Premiership.

“We are looking forward to seeing how he progresses.”

Evans added: “I’m delighted to be part of the squad and to have signed with the Scarlets this season.

“I’d like to credit and thank Narberth RFC, Llandovery College, Cardiff University RFC and Llandovery. I’m very grateful for this opportunity and I’m looking forward to developing.”
