Roberts kick snatches draw

-

PENYGROES nicked a 13-13 draw at Amman United, fly-half Aled Roberts’s penalty with the last kick of the game earning his side a share of the spoils after an entertaining Division 3 West opener.

Home fly-half Tom Caddell banged over a superb long-range effort, but Penygroes began to get a foothold in the game, and fly-half Roberts’s excellent break was only halted by an Amman offence, and Roberts himself sent over the resulting penalty.

Just after the second-half restart, ’Groes swept the ball wide and the excellent Sion Davies took the final pass to crash over for a corner try. Roberts’s conversion made it 10-3.

Caddell put over a penalty, and then with 10 minutes left, Amman full-back Rhys Howells picked up a long punt deep in his own half, slalomed past several tacklers before outstripping the defence to cross for a wonderful solo try. Caddell converted for a 13-10 lead.

Penygroes never gave up, though, and were rewarded with Roberts’s injury-time penalty.

Amman travel to Llangadog this Saturday, while Penygroes are home to New Dock Stars.

Cwmgors started the new season in Division 3 West Central with a 47-3 home defeat against Swansea Uplands. It was 33-3 at the interval. Cwmgors are away at Tonmawr on Saturday.
