DOCTOR’S NOTE
People who consume more artificial sweeteners, such as in diet soft drinks, are at greater risk of heart disease, research suggests.
Scientists say additives found in many processed foods “should not be considered a healthy and safe alternative to sugar”. The study, by Sorbonne Paris Nord University in France, found artificial sweetener consumption in 100,000 adults in France was linked to a 9% higher risk of heart disease. But researchers admit it is not certain the additives caused the increase.
Tracy Parker, from the British Heart Foundation, said: “The findings should not cause undue concern but it’s good to look at the amount of sugar and sweeteners in your diet.”
