LEE CELEBRATES TITLE SUCCESS

A BUSY track and field season ended with success for Carmarthen­shire athletes at local, national and internatio­nal fixtures.

Two months after combined events success, Jessica Lee became England Athletics Under-17 champion in the long jump at Bedford with a leap of 5.84 metres.

At the same event, Lee qualified for the 300m final with a time of 40.83 seconds and Finley Bruce completed the under-17 3000m in 9:11.85.

Lee was also on the podium in Loughborou­gh, winning the UK School Games National long jump title with 5.79m.

Cordelia Walker (37.18m) and Storm Evans (39.82m) also represente­d Wales at the UK School Games in the discus and javelin respective­ly, with Evans winning a bronze medal.

A day later, Evans broke the Carmarthen Harriers under-17 women’s discus club record at the England Throws Camps Fest at Moulton College in Northampto­n, throwing a distance of 42.65m.

Iwan Thomas travelled to Ambleside in Cumbria to compete at the British and Irish Junior Mountain Running Championsh­ips.

The long journey north was rewarded with a second-place finish and a silver medal with a time of 21:28.

Closer to home, eight juniors from Carmarthen Harriers and Llanelli Athletics Club participat­ed at the Swansea Harriers Jumps Open Meeting at the university’s indoor track.

Results: Beatrice Morgan, long jump (4.83m); Paige-Lily Williams, long jump (3.16m); Mari Wilson, high jump (1.44m) and long jump (3.91m); Freya McCarthy, high jump (1.25m) and long jump (4.18m); Amelie Campion, long jump (3.41m); Deklan Roberts, long jump (3.33m); Lyra Roberts, pole vault (2.30m) and Ewan Williams, long jump (4.83m).

Elsewhere, Iwan Wilson (800m; 2:03.71) and Liam Edwards (1500m; 3:58.19) both delivered new personal bests at the British Milers Club regional race in Exeter.

Huw Davies and Steffan Davies were in action at Ras Beca in Crymych, with finishing times of 45:08 and 49:57.

A number of athletes made the trip to Aberdare for the Welsh Masters Track and Field Championsh­ips.

Lisa Franklin, javelin (20.25m); Jenny Phillips, 300m hurdles (1:01.43), 1500m (6:16.47), 400m (1:18.04) and triple jump (7.37m); Kath Morgan, 100m (14.78), 80m hurdles (16.74), long jump (4.17m), high jump (1.31m) and Peter Osborne, 3000m (11:49.48) returned with a haul of 10 individual medals between them.

Running at the final Llanelli AAC 5K series race were Dean Summers (17:00), Ieuan Griffiths (17:02), Callum

Campion (17:36), Dai Clarke (18:45), John Breslin (18:56), Helen Beynon (20:38), Lyra Roberts (20:50), Craig Hopkins (21:54), Ania Coelik (22:16), Hugh Evans (23:15), Ant Heald (24:46), Vanessa Buckler (26:01), Liam Thorley (26:03), Gareth Davies (26:11), Claire Kearney (27:27), Bruce Morgan (28:32), Andrew Morris (29:21), Michelle Bowen (31:58) and Debbie John (32:04).

Road running and cross country events will soon get under way for runners of all ages, including the Welsh Athletics Road Relay Championsh­ips, TCS London Marathon, Wizz Air Cardiff Half Marathon, West Glamorgan Cross Country League and John H Collins Gwent Cross Country League.
