Cwm see off derby rivals

-

CWMAMMAN United came away from a hard-fought match at Ardal League South West rivals Garden Village with a 1-0 win.

The victory came via a powerful strike from Sion Dafydd Williams. It was the second win on the trot for Cwm and manager Paul Lewis will have been especially pleased with a second consecutive clean sheet.

Cwm started well and dominated a first half that saw a Cory Saunders inswinging corner beat everyone and bounce off the far post, while Williams later saw his shot agonisingly trickle past the post. A high ball into the Village box hit a defender’s hand and Cwm were awarded a penalty. Kyle Ashford struck it well but Wyn Walters made an excellent save.

Charlie Davies then fired just wide.

Ross Morgan, Ashford and Davies were dominating midfield and Grant Rees and Callum Dougal were at the heart of controlled Village attacks.

The goal spectacularly arrived in the 39th minute when a cross into the box saw Williams leave Walters with no chance as he rocketed the ball into the net from the edge of the area as he seemed to be facing away from goal.

The second half saw a more even contest, with Walters again making excellent saves from Keiran Richards and from a Williams header.

Village were now breaking upfield more and Kai Rees was forced into a fine fingertip save in the 70th minute.

Both sides had to make changes due to injury with Cwm losing Leon Croucher, Williams and Richards to be replaced by Harrison Thomas, Jordan Sullivan and Alex Giardelli, who was returning to his old club.

Cwm suffered a late scare when Giardelli was shown a red card for a reckless challenge in the 98th minute and they nervously had to defend one last free-kick.

Cwm entertain Treharris Athletic on Saturday at Grenig Park (2.30pm).
