JOBS TO DO THIS WEEK
■ Autumn’s here and the leaves are beginning to fall, left. Collect them and add to your compost heap. Or just put them in bags punctured with a few holes.
■ It’s a great month for planting, the soil is still warm and will allow roots to settle in. So take a visit to your local garden centre and treat yourself to something you’ve always wanted. ■ Any houseplants that you took outdoors for their summer holidays should be brought back indoors now. But beware, some of them will possibly be carrying unwanted guests. It’s important to thoroughly check any fresh growth for aphids which can be removed by hand.
■ Fed up with your lawn? It’s also a good time to roll out new turf. Reduce mowing frequency of existing lawns.
■ Clean out veg beds of old materials and plant out spring cabbages and winter lettuces. Raise pumpkins onto bricks to keep them dry and help ripen for Halloween.
■ It’s a good time to clean up the greenhouse for winter.
