Iestyn storms to British title glory

-

LLANPUMSAINT has a British champion in the shape of teenage driver Iestyn Jones.

The 16-year-old has been competing in his home-built Nissan Micra in the South Wales League and the British Autograss series.

The British series is held over five rounds, where points accumulated over three heats and a final in each round.

It was all to play for in the final round. Iestyn went into in fifth position but the top eight were all very close. Iestyn knew he had a chance of the title should he have a good weekend.

And he did. He won all his heats and the final, meaning he gained top points and became Junior Saloon British Autograss champion.

Iestyn’s father Dafydd, who has built and maintained the car all season, said: “This year has been phenomenal.

“It’s Iestyn’s last year in juniors so we really have focused our efforts on him to give him the chance to do the best he could in his final year.

“He certainly paid back the faith we have shown in him.”

Iestyn’s CV from this year consists of becoming Teifi Autograss Club junior champion, the South Wales League junior champion and the Junior Saloon British champion.

“I have to give thanks to our sponsors,” added Dafydd. “Without their help, these achievements wouldn’t be possible.

“I have to thank my fiancée Del who has supported us in so many ways, and the family and friends for always either being available to help or give us moral support.”

Next year Dafydd and Iestyn intend sharing the car in the men’s competitions.
