Embarrassing for the PM, terrifying for many

On the need for Good Samaritans to come to the fore

- DAVID JONES

FOUR Chancellors in as many months, the Bank of England intervening to steady markets, the highest level of borrowing, increasing inflation and with financial markets in turmoil, this whole scenario must be the highest level of governmental ineptitude since the notorious Black Wednesday in 1992.

Then there’s the obvious panic among MPs, especially those swept in at the last general election which gave the then Prime Minister and his party a resounding victory, sadly squandered by scandal and division. Will they ever learn?

There are, of course, global issues which have affected all world governments and the UK is no exception. Covid-19 and the tragedy of the war in Ukraine have contributed to the bleak situation we are experiencing.

We are told that Liz Truss, the newly elected Prime Minister, is now ‘on the ropes’ as hastily presented policies are now just as hastily being withdrawn.

Not only an embarrassment but deeply concerning for the Prime Minister and her cabinet, but that’s nothing in comparison to the anxiety of those facing mammoth increased mortgage rates and ever-inflating food and heating costs.

Now’s the time that actions must speak louder than words – we will wait and see!

If now is the time for political action, there’s also the responsibility we all have of being supportive to those in need in our communities.

Our local food banks and the churches who open their doors to support the homeless are already seeing increased calls on their limited resources and will be relying even more on our support.

We, too, can be a lifeline to others where we live, keeping an eye on the elderly living alone and those single mums or dads in our street or locality who may be struggling.

None of us are exempt from the increasing financial pressures, but there have been times in our history when in similar situations there arose a renewed sense of community and compassion that shone even through the darkest hours. Jesus said at the end of the parable of the Good Samaritan, a nameless man who showed compassion and care to a man beaten and dying at the roadside: go and do likewise.

This winter that could make all the difference in the world.
