YOUNG OTTERS FALL TO POOLER

-

NARBERTH suffered a 45-24 defeat at home to Pontypool in the WRU Championship Cup.

Pontypool have put together a formidable team and with a strong wind at their backs in the first half they took little time building momentum.

A set-piece move from a lineout saw Pontypool hooker Sam Scarfe cross for the opening try.

Even though Narberth full-back Nick Gale got his side on the scoreboard with a penalty, the visitors dominated the first half.

Scarfe claimed his second touchdown and there were further tries from Pat Lewis, Geraint Walsh, Dan Babos and Joel Mahoney.

Pooler seemingly sealed the game with a try from Scott Matthews early in the second half.

But the home side did threaten a comeback.

The Otters got some points on the board when a flowing movement saw wing Josh Davies kick the ball downfield, reclaim possession and score a try close to the posts. Gale converted.

Then flanker Josh Hamer collected the ball on halfway and raced downfield to score wide out. Fly-half Jonathan Rogers converted.

Narberth scored one final try when replacement scrum-half George MacDonald picked up a loose ball at a ruck and dived under the posts.

Ammanford scored 17 unanswered points in the final five minutes to secure a stunning 35-19 victory over Newcastle Emlyn in the WRU Division One Cup.

The victory moves Ammanford to the top of Group L.

Liam Smith opened the scoring for Ammanford with Lewis Smith, Cian Trevelyn and Harry McBryde crossing for tries.

The pick of the bunch was Trevelyn’s try, with the dynamic openside flanker powering his way past three defenders to force his way over the line.

Amman United beat Llangadog 33-17 in Group L of the WRU Division Three Cup.

Llangadog, who had already beaten Cefneithin, made a turbocharged start and it was no surprise when flanker Ioan Hughes crossed for an early try.

But Amman soon settled and scrum-half Gavin Lewis burrowed over to grab a try converted by flyhalf Adrian Thomas.

Thomas increased the lead with a penalty, but Llangadog hit back as centres Rhodri Davies and Casper Andreason punched holes in the home defence and some excellent passing created a try for loose-head prop Steff Thomas.

Eifion Jones added the conversion.

An Adrian Thomas penalty with the final kick of the half gave the Reds a 13-12 half-time advantage.

Amman took full advantage of Llangadog being down to 14 men following a sin-binning as wing Liam Danter crossed for a try. And they went further ahead when Alun Lewis squeezed over from close range.

Amman were now in the ascendancy and Jack Evans put a further try on a plate for centre Jason Richards. Then centre Acuna Bezara went over for a well-deserved try.

Llangadog refused to lie down and they were rewarded with the try of the match as some brilliant interpassing saw replacement flanker Rhys Evans cross for a superb score.

Amman return to league action on Saturday with a trip to Furnace United. Llangadog entertain Llandeilo.*
