QUINS SUFFER BIG HOME LOSS

-

RGC eased to victory at Carmarthen Quins.

RGC head coach Ceri Jones not only saw his side pick up a handsome win, but also handed new recruit Theo Mayell a debut.

Back-row talent Mayell, a former pupil at Monmouth School and an England Under-18 squad member, has signed for the North Walians from Worcester Warriors in the wake of their financial meltdown.

He made his first-team debut for the Warriors in the Premiership Cup against Gloucester earlier this season.

“Theo is someone I know from his time at Monmouth School, and he is a great addition to our group,” said Jones. “From Theo’s perspective, it’s great to get him up here after what went on with Worcester Warriors.

“He is a player who can play all across the back row and gives us options and adds competition for places in the starting squad.”

Fly-half Dion Jones helped himself to 17 points as RGC eased to a convincing away win in Group A to keep alive their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.

He kicked two early penalties to give his side the lead and then put through the kick that bounced into Rhys Tudor’s hands to earn the visitors the first of their five tries.

Jones then converted his own try to make it 18-3 to the visitors at the break.

Strong defence from the North Walians kept the Quins at bay and the better attacks all came from the visitors, who left a few more tries on the field at Carmarthen Park despite their big win.

Delwyn Jones added a third try at the start of the second half to round off some fine phase play, with Jones again converting, before Daf Williams scored on the blindside of a scrum. The final try came from Jordan

Jones, with Dion Jones adding the extras.

“I thought the attitude from the players was great,” added head coach Jones. “The physicality and attacking intent put us on the front foot and in a strong position heading into the second half. It was another long trip, but the fact we had more energy than the home side is huge credit to the players.”
