A RETIRED teacher died after sustaining a “blunt force head injury” in a town centre, an inquest has heard.

Peter Thomas Ormerod died on September 28, four days after an incident in Station Road in Burry Port.

Mr Ormerod, who was 75 and originally from the Bury area, was a retired secondary school mathematics teacher who had worked for years at Ysgol Gyfun Bro Myrddin in Carmarthen and at the town’s Queen Elizabeth Grammar School for Boys before that.

An inquest into his death was opened on Friday, October 28 at Llanelli Town Hall by the assistant coroner for Carmarthenshire, Mark Layton.

Speaking at the hearing, coroner’s officer Hayley Rogers said Mr Ormerod sustained a “traumatic head injury” at the scene of the incident – on the evening of September 24 – and was taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea, before later being airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.

Miss Rogers added: “Due to the extent of his injuries, he passed away four days later on September 28, 2022.”

Formally opening the inquest, Mr Layton said that a provisional cause of death was noted as a blunt force head injury including skull fractures and cerebral contusions. He adjourned the inquest to a date to be fixed.

On Wednesday, October 26, 39-yearold Hywel David Williams, of North Clive Street, Grangetown, Cardiff, appeared at Swansea Crown Court, where he entered a not guilty plea to a single charge of manslaughter in relation to Mr Ormerod’s death. He was released on bail ahead of a trial which is set to begin on July 10 next year.

Following Mr Ormerod’s death, his family described him as a “very loved and loving father, grandfather, brother and friend.”

Dr Llinos Jones, headteacher at Ysgol Bro Myrddin and someone who worked with the retired teacher for years, said he was a “dedicated colleague and an enthusiastic mathematics teacher throughout his career of over 30 years at the school”, and added that “a generation of children will remember him with a smile”.
