Q

I want to transfer some hydrangea plants to a new garden as we are moving house. They are about two feet tall and were grown from cuttings about six years ago. So should I put them into pots first, or transfer straight into the ground? Is now a good time to do it as I only have a couple of months before the move? Jo Fowler

A

Hi Jo. The dormant season is the best time to move a hydrangea, so that’s from next month onwards when the leaves have dropped and the flowers are over. The dormant season lasts until around March so that’s your window of opportunity, but if you live somewhere very cold, I’d either do it in November or early spring as it’s not an easy job when the ground is frozen. If you plan to do it next month, you can keep them in a pot until you’re ready to plant out. Hydrangeas lifted in spring can go straight into their new position in the ground.
