Pupils celebrate success as Beat the Street contest ends

-

BEAT the Street Llanelli has come to an end with a total of 6,589 people walking, cycling and rolling for points and prizes during the six-week challenge.

The community clocked up a total of 43,844 miles during the competition.

Beat the Street was devised by GP Dr William Bird to make exercise and physical activity fun by introducing a competitive game element.

Beeping and flashing sensors called Beat Boxes were placed around the town and players were then invited to walk, cycle and run between the contactless Beat Boxes scoring points with their cards.

The winners include Ysgol Gymraeg Ffwrnes who topped the total points leaderboard and Pwll CP Mixed School who topped the average points leaderboard.

Steff Rogers from Ysgol Gymraeg Ffwrnes, said: “The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the Beat the Street experience.

“From the moment Actif Sir Gar came in and explained the game during a school assembly, there was an enthusiasm for the game, with pupils asking what the score was or seeing which school was our closest rival.

“As well as the obvious health benefits, the game has also reminded the pupils about being safe and visible when out walking, cycling or rolling during the winter months.

“The scores also teach some valuable numeracy skills like average points and place value.”

Additionally, local charities

Tyisha Foodbank, Calon+ and Mind will receive £200 each thanks to the community’s efforts.

Carmarthenshire Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, leisure, culture and tourism Cllr Gareth John, said: “It has been an amazing Beat the Street for Llanelli and we would like to thank everyone who took part.

“Congratulations to each and every player who got involved with Beat the Street and took the time to play the game as a team.

“By being active every day for six weeks, you will hopefully have created small, achievable lifestyle changes for the long-term.

“We hope that people will continue to walk or cycle or school or work and will enjoy being active.”
