Tyler makes winning start
TROSTRE ABC fighter Tyler-Lee Davies has made a winning start to his amateur boxing career.
Davies was pitted against Cameron Clark of Prizefighter ABC in Johnstown.
Both 16-year-olds weighed a solid 94kg.
Clark started strongly following the opening bell, with heavy swinging hooks from both hands. He put pressure on Davies, who demonstrated his defensive skills by blocking a number of blows.
Davies was also able to slip under some hooks before fighting back, not letting Clark get his own way, though the Prizefighter teenager probably shaded the round.
The second round started with a flurry of action as the boys produced what turned out to be the best bout of the night.
Clark continued by throwing an array of heavy hooks. The pressure was on Davies, who reacted well by fighting back and landing with his own scoring punches.
Davies was advised by his corner that he had to win the last round to make sure of the verdict as Clark’s all-out aggression had perhaps given him a slight lead going into the third.
Davies reacted positively to his corner’s advice, throwing straighter punches in an effort to push Clark back and keep his opponent off balance.
Davies showed a good level of fitness, displaying renewed energy as he demonstrated good defensive skills with head movement and neat footwork, which on two occasions drew loud applause from the home crowd as he ducked under Clark’s hooks and moved off the ropes, before countering with his own right hand.
The verdict was in doubt until the end, with a delighted Davies having his hand raised on a split decision.
