YOUNG HARRIERS STORM TO GOLD

PENLAN Arena in Brecon hosted the 119th Welsh Athletics Cross Country Championsh­ips.

Held previously at Singleton Park and Pembrey Country Park, the championsh­ips moved to Powys for the latest edition with around 800 athletes taking part.

Two primary school races in conjunctio­n with Urdd Gobaith Cymru were also held at the start of the programme.

Carmarthen Harriers’ under-17 men won gold in the team event, with several others finishing in the top 10 of their respective age groups.

Attention for students moved to Sheffield and the British Universiti­es Indoor Athletics Championsh­ips. Jessica Hyland and Lili Church, representi­ng Swansea University and Cardiff Met University, qualified for finals in their respective events on day two.

Hyland took eight seconds off her previous best 3000m time, clocking a new lifetime best of 10:12.54.

Meanwhile, Church cleared a season’s best height of 1.69m to finish fourth in the high jump.

 ?? ?? Carmarthen Quins Youth beat Morriston Youth 20-0 in the National Youth quarter-final in the Plate competitio­n. The Quins’ tough defence prevented Morriston from scoring, while forwards and backs put on an impressive attacking display. Wing Jac Thomas crossed for a hat-trick of tries, with Tomos Lewis kicking a penalty and conversion. The Quins now go on to the semi-finals on March 9 against either Carmarthen Athletic or Ruthin.
